Thank you for the fresh take on something I learned to use in a high school interior design class! Over the years, I have made use of this technique every time I've moved or planned a major change or purchase for my home, and helping friends and families thru those same events has inspired them as well.
If you want to take the idea a step further, get the kids involved . . . create your furnishings to scale on a separate piece of graph paper and have them cut the pieces out and label them. That way, you can move them around your floor plan to create a pleasing arrangement. Let the kids help, they might have some surprising insights!
Another step that can be a lifesaver, especially before making additional purchases, is to review how a finished wall will look by creating an 'elevation'. See just how your sofa is going to look with that window treatment. If you use the tall bookcase instead of the short one, can you still arrange your art collection on that wall? Will grandma's antique armoire overpower the space? How can you balance it? Take the floor plan concept to the walls - measure your wall, all its features, windows, moldings, important things like, where are the electrical outlets (you don't want cords running all over the place and you certainly don't want them buried behind that armoire!) the dimensions of your furnishings, this time vertical, and your accessories.
Now you are ready to create a visual of your wall (in glorious color if you wish) that can save you time and effort, and ensure an end result that will have you glowing with pleasure (not perspiration) over the finished product.
